I love love love the short fairy tales retold by Gail Carson Levine and of course Ella Enchanted.

Also recently enjoyed Five Glass Slippers which contains 5 different takes on Cinderella written by five different authors. They have a Beauty and the Beast retelling as well but I haven't read it yet.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Gregory Macguire. The first book I read by him was Wicked. It was The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. He also writes Confessions of an Ugly Step-Sister (Cinderella's sisters side of the tale), Son of a Witch (Wicked Witch of the West's son), Mirror Mirror (Snow White), and several others. His books are mature content and usually quite dark retellings. I truly enjoyed them.

I've read those two books. I agree completely. They were both very, very good. They were definitely more deep than other versions of the same two tales.

I'm guiltily enjoying The Lunar Cronicles by Marissa Meyer. I was skeptical going in...I mean a story of a cyborg Cinderella, what? But I was totally sucked into these interesting takes on Cinderella and Red Riding Hood. I haven't finished the last 2 on Snow White and Rapunzel yet.

Have you read "Daughter of the Forest" by Juliet Marillier? It's a retelling of the seven swans fairytale.
