World Book Night

Post by pyjama »

Hi everyone!

When I was in the UK for my Masters, I was a volunteer for World Book Night. I already knew that the UK had a culture of reading & writing, but I didn't realize that there were communities which didn't or couldn't read enough. Hence, World Book Night was created to spread even further the habit of reading to non-readers.

This year, even Italy started something similar, and I was chosen as a volunteer to give out the books.

I was curious to know if you know or have experienced something similar in your country?

I have never heard of it here in the USA, but I could have just been missing out. :shifty:

I also haven't heard of it here in the USA but it sounds like a wonderful idea.

I think they used to have it in the USA, but they canceled it probably due to money.

This was my first time hearing about this program. I was disappointed to see the U.S. had stopped doing this in 2014. As I was looking this up I found other interesting book related dates though. August 9th was National Book Lovers Day, and tomorrow September 6th is National Read A Book Day. It's a shame that none of those put books in people's hands like World Book Night does.

I haven't heard anything about it up in Canada either. I'm sure there would be a significant interest if there was an appropriate amount of socialising and visibility to the cause.

I've never heard of this but it's a wonderful idea. You're lucky you got to participate in such an event. I hope other places start to do this! I would gladly participate.
