Ever Fallen in Love with a Character?

Post by RILENTLISS »

Alright so this one is for the people that truly geek out on books, and perhaps had little "spice" in high school. Have you ever fallen in love with a character in a book that you read?
I never have, but when reading Great Expectations, I began to correlate qualities in Stella with a girl I was attracted to. So this became a parallel attraction, if you will. LOL sounds lame, but a mature confession. Feel free to bite if it smells right. ;)

I have my likes, but I have never fallen in love with a character; however, your topic reminded me of the movie Lost in Austen where a modern day Jane Austen fan fell in love with Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and actually became a character in the story by switching places with Miss Elizabeth by means of a magical doorway in her bathroom.

Right now, though, I am writing something, and I am feeling a lot of love for my characters. It is interesting to see how they are developing almost with a life of their own.

Yeah, it's a remarkable thing to create your own characters. Where is this love coming from? Is it attachment, their apparent fluidity, or something different?

I think it is a bit of everything, but fluidity probably stands out the most. I am amazed at times at how they almost create their own twists and turns. I am never sure just how the character is going to be when I sit down to write. Mostly, I just go with the flow and see where it takes me.

Yes, on Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice. This is one of my favorite books ever.

I am very attached to Jack Reacher in Lee Child's books. I have my own image of him in my head and even though Tom Cruise played his character in a movie, the Jack in my head is more muscular and rugged. Ah!!!! Love 8)

Rilentliss,

I love how you said your confession may sound lame, but it is a "mature confession". I love that. I'm going to use that from now on. Ummm… I have to agree with Juan on this one. I fell in love with Sherlock Holmes from the start. Even though "falling in love" is an emotion, I have always been more prone to thinking and analyzing rather than having emotions. My head rules my heart most of the time. So, I related with Sherlock in that sense. Also, I really loved Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables. When I was young I absolutely adored Romeo from Shakespeare. That was actually for the complete of reason of living Sherlock Holmes. It was because Romeo actually understood his emotions and acted upon them, which is something I am not that great at.

Leo from the Rick Riordan series "Heroes of Olympus." He sets a spectacular humor for the entire book series. If he was a real person, I would have a major crush on him. His traumatic experiences haven't brought him down. He is a "7th" wheel, but contributes a lot to his friends.

I definitely had some crushes in high school. Funny, because I never really crushed on real boys. Perhaps a really am a nerd lol.

I mostly know what you mean about the parallel attraction though, because there was a guy I was in love with and he was sooo much like one of the characters in a series I read.

I love that! I don't know, but I think this says something about us. What it says, I don't know yet, but it falls somewhere along the lines of a willingness to love, and be loved, in an epic way, by an epic person. Anyway shoot it if I'm off. LOL
