I prefer bittersweet endings. Not happy but not sad .

I am such a hopeless romantic and always prefer happy endings - even if the tone of the book perhaps better suits a more melancholy end.

Sad!!! I think sad books are usually more satisfying, and often feel like happy endings should have been/would have been improved by being made into sad ones! I feel the same way about movies!

There is a time and place for each type of ending. For example, I have no problem with a depressing when that has been the theme of the book. One may choose to expect hope from a happy book but not from one that intends to prey on the pessimist. "On the Beach" is an excellent example of this.

Definitely happy endings! I know they're predictable sometimes, but I'm too emotional to deal with sad endings. I like "happily ever afters".

I prefer any ending that is realistic and fits in with the plot of the story. Ive seen happy endings to stories when I felt like it wasn't deserved. I've read sad endings when I felt there should have finally been a happy one. Basically the ending has to make sense with the flow of the story.

I prefer an ending where everybody gets what he/she deserves whether happy or sad. I don't like a forced happy ending, i'll rather prefer it bitter-sweet.

Sad endings need to be well done for me to enjoy them. A good number of the books I've read that have sad or bittersweet endings seem forced and poorly thought out. In cases like that, it's clear that the author is trying to be "different." I prefer a poorly done happy ending to a poorly done sad one.

That being said, a sad ending that's really well done resonates really strongly with me and often leave me reflecting on the story for days or weeks afterwards. Those are really satisfying to me.

I don't think sad endings are any more realistic than happy ones. BUT I do generally prefer happy endings since sad ones are usually rather disappointing and make me wonder what the point of the whole thing was... So, if you have a downer ending, please at least have a point!

Overall, I would rather have a balanced ending. Some good, some bad, some neutral. Maybe something complicated, good-bad? Something ironic? Yeah. Something that sticks with you (in a positive, non-rage-inducing way).

I prefer happy endings but have read my share of sad ones which were just as good. I am more interested in the story being great.

I prefer happy endings but then, so far ot ends well and suits the entire story, I'm cool with it.

Bittersweet for sure! I prefer not to end up sobbing, and sometimes happy endings can be so dull.

So something un between works better in my opinion.

I agree with this! It really depends on the genre.
