Like many of you, there were several books that I had to read for school and ended up enjoying immensely. My favorites were No God But God by Reza Aslan, Stay Alive My Son by Pin Yatay, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Loved studying Much Ado About Nothing, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, and Hamlet at school. Hated Cold Mountain at the time, but have softened on it since.

In high school I really enjoyed Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea.

In college it was As for Me and My House, a Depression-era classic by Canadian author Sinclair Ross.

Nothing I read in school ever really grew on me that much. But I feel like I didn't have to do a whole lot of reading in school. Maybe I should have taken harder classes or maybe it was just the school, I don't know.

I loved some of the classics we had to read like East of Eden, Hamlet, Wuthering Heights, and Tess of the d"Urbervilles, but I really hated 1984, Lord of the Flies, and A Tale of Two Cities.

I really enjoyed anything by William Shakespeare, but when I try to read it on my own the extra research and guess work makes it nearly impossible. I took an english class specifically that studied Shakepeares works the entire semester and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
I actually saw a red fern this past summer, and I honestly burst into tears. I initially read this in 6th grade with the class and everyone was crying, even the boys, in the last few chapters.
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
I hated it at first and I mean hated it, but as we continued reading it sort of became magical to me.
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
I love love this book, at first I was wary, because at the time I though Dolphins were stupid (I was a bit of a tomboy) and thought the whole book was going to be about them, and it really isn't. This is a must read. I remembered when my dog chewed up my original copy, I wanted to cry, but my Mum bought me a new one.

I read Pride and Prejudice in 10th grade, a compulsory read, and I would have to say that, that was and still is my favourite book.
