Could you date someone who doesn't read?

They would have to pick up at least some books once in awhile and read them. They don't have to have the same passion as me, but I don't think I could handle dating a person who doesn't read at all...

I have, but I don't recommend it! It's a good question, though, and I think it's something I would definitely consider before my next relationship. There's no question I have more interesting conversations with friends who are readers-so it makes sense that I would want my partner to be a reader too. (hmmm.....I'm starting to see a disconnect in some previous relationships--maybe that's where I went wrong!)

You know when you have a first date, you don't know yet if your partner likes to read not. Later after some time you get it and then you may choose. As for me i can't say that it's so gravely if my boy-friend doesn't read. I'll do my best to make him love reading!

I dated someone for years who didn't read books. He thought novels were a waste of time and poetry was affected. He was a scientist. Really, a science professor (older men ftw!).

However, he was among the best storytellers I've ever met. We'd spend whole evenings out in the garden smoking and listening to his stories. Hilarious.

And he was smart, not just science-textbook smart, but smart smart. He played people like they were chess pieces, knew just where your weakness was and how you'd react. Unfailingly, every time. So it was a good idea to be on his side, and to look to him for advice/help.

So, um. Just because someone doesn't read fiction doesn't mean they're dumb or not worth dating, guys. I mean...they could be totally, meltingly charismatic, exuberant with life, have a rock hard tanned body, a voice that touches you...oh! *goes for ice*

My husband will read tech manuels for fun. He has a brain but no imagination. I can have a discussion on M theory with him, but he could care less about fiction.

My husband just walked in the room and asked me what I was doing. I told him searching the discussion topics for new ideas of books to read. He responded that it sounded like a waste of time. My second husband will like to read.

I dated and was engaged to a couple of guys who told me that they were avid readers. After a period of time I discovered that they were lying. I suppose they were only telling me that because it was very important to me. I discovered it not only by their lack of books laying about, but by what their lack of basic knowledge of books. So, in addition to other things, I found this to be unacceptable.

I adore books - I am always immersed in something and currently I have nine books next to my bed. But my husband of 32 years did not read. Somewhere along the line I began to read snippets of books to him at night in bed. Then he chose a book from my collection - Wolf in Shadow by David Gemmell - and we would take turns in reading a chapter each out loud. He is still not a great reader as such but when the right book comes along he really enjoys it. His last choice was The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, not bad going for a non reader

If your partner is not really a book fan why don't you try sharing a fave read? You never know.

Out of all of my ex-boyfriends, none were readers! So I have, but I don't think I could have a serious relationship with someone who didn't read - I think I would prefer going out with someone who reads, especially for any relationships in the future. That's my next goal - find a guy who likes reading

The last two guys I've been involved with weren't avid readers. I think that I could date someone that doesn't read but understand my love of books. I'm not made fun of my extensive collection they all knew that it was important to me.

I could be involved with someone that wasn't an avid reader I guess, but it's nice to have that in common. I always thought it was odd that my brother, who I'm close to (in age and relationship wise) never reads, he cant' stand it.

My ex-wife actually didn't read when we met and married. About half way through our marriage she got into Anita Blake and then all sorts of Vampire Romance, Urban Fantasy type novels. My current gf has always been a big reader and still is and even though we don't read the exact same type of books, we do have a bit more cross-over.

not impossible but very difficult. i tend to talk about power and justice and stuff like that on a date so if a guy can talk about it without reading, i guess i can but then i always drag some author and his views into the conversation so that will be a tough one. hey! now i know why i am single

i once knew a guy who thought buying books was a waste of money because once you are done reading, you'll have no use for it. those are the type of guys i wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Thats quite possible i mean i'm doing it now he knows that i enjoy reading but also enjoy other things that my significant other likes to do such as listen and write music so my answer is yes i could. its not impossible you know!!!!
