wow this is a good topic ... my boyfriend right now can't even read his summer book for school and is asking me to "help" him read it, which i translate to "read it for me please?"
obviously i CAN date a nonreader .... its jus rly annoying sumtimes ... he gets jealous that i'd rather read my book at some nights rather than talk to him ...

Sadly my husband doesn't read AT ALL and I read all the time. I have tried to buy him sports non-fiction [even some with pictures hehe] to try and intrigue him but nothing works

yes i could date someone who didnt read. But it would help if they did as the topic of conversation would be so much higher and might make for a good debate. But overall the person has to just be interesting and books is only one thing in life!

I am married to a reader. We tend to have pretty good discussions even if we don't read the same books all the time. However, I created a Shelfari account today and figured out that NONE of my friends read. I couldn't invite any of them to join since none of them read on a consistent basis!

No way! One of the best things in a relationship is when you can talk about books, suggest authors and their works and discuss them. It's a never ending source for communication. Unfortunately not everybody is a great reader, though...

I definatly could. My father never read, but we still had intersesting things to talk about. As long as they understood that I loved to read, we'd be fine.

Not really. A person who never reads can never really reach their potential intellectually and I need a woman with a brain so I couldn't date anyone without a brain (I mean a book). The only success that doesn't come from reading is luck in a lottery or something like that. The only self-made successful people are so successful because they read.
Have a great read

I suppose it depends on the extremes. If the person thought reading was junk and had no interest whatsoever, I think there could be issues, books are pretty important to me. My girlfriend isn't a big reader anyway, but she enjoys some books and while we usually can't talk too deep about the classics, we can often discuss contemporaries. It's more the "Twilight" debate that creates a real rift. Haha.

For me, i have been always hoping to find/date someone who enjoys reading English books as much as i do. I am from China but i ENJOY reading English books only. There is not a single Chinese book in my bookshelf. So it will be great if i can find someone who loves English as much as i do. Or i should not stay in China anymore?

I don't think I would. I'd feel empty if I couldn't chat about books.

I'm dating a non reader right now, we started dating in high school when we had a lot more in common, but now we live together and he just continually complains about how much time I spend reading. We're still together but barely; it has become a big problem over the last couple of years and I wouldn't recommend it.

I married someone who doesn't read and it is disappointing & frustrating to be unable to discuss & share certain books or thoughts & feelings stemming from reading a certain book. I spend a lot of time in bookstores and was overcome with emotion when I saw a couple picking out books, laughing as they read certain passages together. I wish I had that...
I think it would be less of an issue if the other person has some intellectual curiosity or ability to discuss 'things'.

Why not a try? I can get along with different types
of people. As long as he is man enough to pay our
bills and has a sense of humor.

I am currently dating a guy that doesn't enjoy reading like i do. I don't mind not having those stimulating conversations about great books. I go to my friends for that. The thing that i do mind is when i begin to indulge in a great book the kind that you don't want to put down. He really doesn't get that and wants me to stop reading sometimes and hang out with him when he comes over.
Sometimes i just want to sick with a relaxing book on the couch with him lol.
I was once lucky enough where he found a book he wanted to read and it was the cutest thing both of us reading. So i'll just have to hope he finds another.
