Ive found that over the years and living in a lot of different places, a very necessary read is Popular Mechanics Home Repair Guide.

I'm not sure "everyone" "should" read any book, but for wide appeal, with great messages and or stories, how about:

To Kill a Mockingbird -- we all surely agree

The Phantom Tollbooth -- thought provoking word and idea juxtapositions

Searching for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe -- poignant, "real" (though some may think dated, but the overall messages are timeless) and again, the perspectives.

Hey, that Popular Mechanics is a neat answer.
FYI:, as far as periodicals, "Wired" keeps you up to date and it's incredible what's happening. Also well-written.

One more thing: USA Today print version is very readable, user friendly way to learn to "take the pulse of" and become quickly familiar with topics from the Syrian rebellion to a local state and city's happenings.
Well written.

So many books, so little time...But there are some I think is worth the time. For anyone Narnia is great. And if your not such a big reader at least The Hobbit to get a taste of Tolkien's world.

The list is literally endless but here is a start.

Music for Chamleons by Truman Capote (so everyone could see beautifully written - inspired words - his use of words to paint visual and even emotional images is amazing)

The Stand, by Stephen King (I think everyone here knows why)

Lord of the Flies - by Golding (for a look at the darker side of the human animal)

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn (who wouldn't want to read a book told from the perspective of an albino, hunchback dwarf whose brother has flippers instead of hands/arms... twisted book)

Anything by Edgar Poe

That is just a short list and I keep thinking of books I should add but I will stop at those for now.

I think everyone should read Safe Harbor by Luanne Rice. It is one of my favourite books and I absolutely adore it. It's a great read that you will make you think and it is a book that you won't want to put down.

I add my vote to 1984... but if you only have a 5 minutes, read Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut - you can find the full text in many places online.
A short and succinct snapshot of where we are heading.

Everyone everyone EVERYONE should read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. It is a wonderfully written tragedy. A fantastic exploration of a young man's search for freedom. But the reason I think everyone should read it is the book's potential to inspire.

There is a hot debate on whether Chris McCandless (the subject of the book) should be esteemed as a hero, or ridiculed as a reckless fool. No matter which side you end up on, your life will definitely be put into perspective and be primed for examination. Everyone's life deserves a proper examination from time to time!

The Death of Ivan Ilych by Tolstoy is functionally the same thing, but a bit more dense and preachy. Still good stuff though!

I read a good one by Geoffery Archer, Sons of Fortune.
I like it because it covers it all; comedy, mystery and HEAPS of drama!
