The Good Earth
A Separate Peace
A Day in the Life of Ivan Desinovich

Read them all in HS and loved all three of them.

I am also obsessed with Macbeth and would love one day to see it performed.

I just got the book 1001 Books to Read Before You Die. Needless to say it is full of suggestions. There is also a spreadsheet online somewhere that you can fill in and see what percentage you have read. I'm at 16.18% and have a long way to go...

I am curious as to what books you all think that everyone should read. I know everyone has different tastes. But what are the books that you feel everyone should atleast read once.

1984 is often suggested to me, and i cant believe that i still have never read it, but are there any others you could suggest?

any responses appreciated.

I think a "great read" depends on who you are as a literary person. For some it is the classics, for others it is non-fiction... Once you find out what you enjoy reading most, then you can begin building your repertoire of "must haves."

Some of my favourites include:

The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
1984 - George Orwell
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
The Hiding Place - Corrie ten Boom
Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster

I could go on, but will leave it at that. Happy reading!

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

Of Mice and Men

For children/young adult I would choose :

Corey and Skylar in the Land of Lavish

The Boxcar Children

I think maybe everyone should read a few Tom Clancy books. I know they are fiction but they do make you think about the need for some things in government to be kept secret. I wonder just how many times our bacon was on the griddle and we never knew/may never know about it.

I think that everyone should read Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. It’s really an insightful novel.

I am compiling a list of books to read, and this thread has helped a lot. I see that Jasper Fforde's books were recommended just above my post. That series was definitely the first to jump into my mind when I saw this thread.

The 3 books that I recommend to everyone are:

Watership Down
The Count of Monte Cristo
Life of Pi

No matter what level of reader you are, you have to apperciate the storytelling in these novels.

Fatherland by Robert Harris
White Noise by Don Delillo
1984 by George Orwell (popular choice it seems here)
Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger (named my first son Holden, hope he turns out different than the character)
The Shining by Stephen King
Along Came a Spider by James Patterson (Way different than the movie)
Angel Fire East by Terry Brooks (Whole Word/Void Series)
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
The Bible by God

Umm, there is almost to many to list my brain is being flooded with titles.[/b]
