Entangled: Ages of Invention Steampunk, Book #1

  by S.B.K. Burns

The First Ten

Because Entangled was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted reviewers have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book. The reviewers even read at least the first 10 pages of the book. They have each written a short review explaining why they plan to read the whole book or not based on the sample they read and other aspects of the book. Their feedback is displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten.

Over a million books are published each year. Any given person could not even read .0001% of the books out there. This means readers have to be very selective. Even taking the time to look over reviews and blurbs, let alone read samples, is more time than most readers can afford for most books. The First Ten is a powerful focus group that addresses those issues. It creates a helpful tool for authors, publishers, and other readers.

I probably wouldn't have sampled the book on own as the cover seems a bit sleazy. I would have never guessed the book involves time travel and steampunk (my favorite genres) based on it. The blurb is informative and grabbed my attention. Sadly, I can't say the same on the sample. The sample started well enough, introducing Dawn and the world, but I started to lose interest soon after the next scene, which described Taylor's erotic dream. From what I have read, I suspect that the focus of the book would be more on the romance aspect and less on the other aspects. As I didn't see any official review to reassure me otherwise, I won't read the book at this time.

I didn't care for the cover which looks more like an erotic teacher-student romance than a time travel/alternative history fantasy. The summary is to edited well, but the plot seems too busy for my taste. The first paragraph in the book contains an error (the word Heavy has a space between letters). I didn't find the beginning pages compelling as the story doesn't move forward easily. Between the subject matter and writing style, this is not a book I want to continue reading.

Vermont Reviews

Today's book Entangled by S.B.K. Burns shows the main charaters Dawn Jameson and Taylor Stepheson brother of Richard Stepheson who were both Cartesians while Dawn was one of the hume'ns. From the preview it appears that Taylor and Dawn are about to have more than just a friendship. I found the story line interesting. The cover art for the book is great. At this time I will not be downloading a copy of the book. Although based on the preview I would have purchased the book.

At first glance, I would not have picked this up if it was not part of the First Ten program because it does not seem like my type of book. I thought the blurb was adequately written, but I wished there was an online book club review so I could get more information.
After reading the first ten pages, other than one spacing mistake between letters, I can say that this book seems professionally edited and it also seems well-written. The plot of the book does not appeal to me since time travel is not my thing, therefore I do not intend to read the rest of this book.

The book has an interesting start. Dawn’s situation appealed to me the most out of the ten-page sampling because it showed Dawn’s mindset as a student in her university. The best part, to me, was Dawns’If I were not a part of this program, I would have likely overlooked it due to the quasi-porno nature of the book cover image. There was no OnlineBookClub review, but this didn’t deter my interest in the book. I will not buy this book and read it because, overall, it doesn’t appeal to my taste in book genres or characters. There were no typos or grammatical errors.

This is not a book that I would normally pay attention to. I found the blurb hard to follow and wasn't really sure what the book is about. The cover screams romance while the blurb suggested heavy fantasy elements, so it's hard to know what you're really getting into. I felt like the book picked up as if it's the second or third book in a series. It starts mentioning different elements with no explanation, as if the reader is already privy to what's going on. This made it confusing to follow the story. I didn't see an OBC review, which I think could have helped in explaining the overall plot of the book and whether it would be worth the effort to read. I came out of reading the first ten pages just as clueless as I was going in. For me, I feel like this book would take a lot of effort to read and understand, therefore I won't be reading any further.

This isn't something I would normally read, and indeed the cover seems a little bit off-putting to me, though that is from personal taste and not any particular problem. The interior seems to be formatted fairly well, but I did note a few formatting issues in the look-inside feature that made the book look less than professional. All in all, I think this is a great work for valentine's day, but not something I will be continuing with.

The cover alone made me think this book was ridiculous and over-the-top, but I sampled it anyway to see what was inside. The book's contents did not convince me that my initial opinions were wrong. I also spotted some spacing and formatting errors that make me believe this book was not professionally edited.

After reading the blurb, I was highly intrigued. This story sounds so unique and creative and intriguing. I like science fiction and mystery and this book seems to have a lot of those elements. After reading the first ten pages, I am interested in getting to know more about the characters and their past lives. I will read the rest.

I can honestly say that, if this book were not in the first ten, I would not have given it a second thought - simply based on the cover. I am decidedly not a fan of the romance genre. I find the plots far too formulaic and, frankly, the emphasis on physical titillation boring. The cover on this book just screams (or moans) romance novel, and put me off to the point I had to make myself get it to read those first ten pages.

I’m glad I did, though. I found the first ten pages did not, in any way, match up to my expectation based on the cover and the editorial description. In fact, I found my attention quite caught up in the characterization of the woman facing the council, in the contrast of Hume’ns and Cartesians, and in the play of ideas around time travel and meditative channeling. There’s a lot of potential in these plot lines, and well played science fiction does tend to catch my attention.

I did not note any grammar or typographical errors in this portion of the book.

I will likely not be reading this book. Although the plot served to have more potential than I expected, as I stated, I do not enjoy romance novels, and this editorial review clearly categorized the book this way. With the introduction of the male, angst-y character, I would expect the plot to be taking a turn more towards that direction and away from the science fiction aspect, and so I would elect to read other books in my limited time.

Based on the cover of the book, I probably wouldn't read the book because it looks like a romance novel and I usually don't read romance novels. After reading the sample, I decided not to buy the book. It didn't interest me enough to read the whole book. It also didn't have an official online book club review so I had to base my opinion on what I thought of the sample. If it did have an official online book club review, I probably would have been more likely to buy the book. I did see some typos, there was too much space between the letters in some words, but it could have been the formatting. The main thing that I didn't like about the book was the way the author described the scenes. It was a little dull and the characters doesn't seem to be that interesting.

If I had not read the sample, I would not have read the story. I really do not like the cover - it seems awkward and tacky to me. The blurb was also a little boring. After reading the sample, I have not changed my mind. There were several errors, such as "H eavy breathing" and "What if Richard were wrong?" (was) in Chapter 1. I did however like how the main character's thoughts/commentary were typed in italics. I did not read an official review.

The cover of this novel makes the reader think of romance. The description was intriguing, but what sold me was the sample. I enjoyed the sample, and the quick peek into Dawn and Taylor's lives. There does seem to be an odd formatting issue at the beginning of each chapter. The first letter on each page has an extra space or two making an odd separation but other than that I did not observe any other issues. There is not an OnlineBookClub review, but the book has several high rating reviews on Amazon. Honestly, if I had not sampled the book, I would not have decided to purchase it.

This cover is off putting as it protrays a heavy on the romance book which I steer clear of. Reading the sample however, I get a different picture, one of time-travelling, intrigue, a mysterious Council which all seems interesting. It appears to be well-edited.

As I read the blurb and reviews for "Entangled," I was not immediately thrilled by this book. Honestly, I am not a big fan of romance in general and for that reason alone I would not have chosen to read this book prior to sampling it as part of this program. My favorite part of the sample was the writing. The author clearly has an interesting style; I especially liked the way the author described the settings. I really felt transported. It was clear the novel was professionally edited. I did not notice any grammatical or editorial issues in the sample. Despite the fact that I enjoyed the writing style, I don't think this book is for me mostly based on the content. There wasn't anything unique or exciting that piqued my interest in the beginning sample. I will not be purchasing and reading this book.

I wasn't really attracted to this book when I saw it. The cover looked a little sloppy, and I wasn't sure what was the deal with the predatory taloned-woman and the nearly-naked guy in cap and gown who looked like he was getting ready to jump off a bridge. It didn't read romance, science fiction, steampunk... anything, really. When I read the sample, I was less than riveted. I get the Descartes/Hume references, but I'm not sure how they're being applied or how the characters share this frame of reference. It felt like entering in the middle of the story, and I wasn't interested enough to wait and see if it eventually explains itself.

The cover of this book did not seem to reflect what it was actually about. After reading the description, I knew it was a sci-fi/fantasy novel. I read the first few pages because I thought it might have some time travel, which interests me. Although the book seems to be well-written with a unique plot, I couldn't get into the story. I won't be reading it.

The title is fine while the genre is interesting. The blurb does not really interest me, and there is a low number of reviews, which doesn't include an OBC one. However, what would really push me into not sampling this read is the cover. Generally, any cover that shows a man's chest is likely to be a sexual book and I have come to not enjoy these reads.

Based on what I read, the book does seem to be professionally edited. Dawn seems like a likable character right from the beginning; this is a very important quality in any read. However, I don't know how I feel with the talk of auras and past lives. Therefore, I do not plan on purchasing this book today to finish reading it.

I would not have looked at this book, as it is not in a genre I read. The cover could be improved, but I've seen worse. As for errors, the first word, 'heavy', is broken in two.
The premise is generally interesting, but I'm not a fan of the genre, so I won't be continuing.

This is not the type of book I normally read. I do not like the cover. The title is rather small which gives it an unprofessional look, not to mention the picture looks a little creepy. The first ten pages did not interest me. Things like auras and past lives are not up my alley which is why I will not be reading further. I noticed a space between one word so I don't think the book has been professionally edited. I did not see an OBC official review but the lack of one has not affect my decision.

Offering this one on Valentines day was a good choice since it seems like a totally new turn from what is usually offered for romance novels. I'm not generally a fan of romance novels, mainly because they are often too predictable for me. However, this one does seem more my style. The only reason I'm choosing to pass on this one is because my reading list has grown past what I can manage at this point.

Although I enjoy books that contain romance and suspense, this book has too much sci-fi for my liking. After reading the sample, I have decided that this book definitely isn't for me. It felt like a chore to finish the sample and it did not entertain me. The cover and title seem sort of cliche and generic. I will not be purchasing this book.

From the cover and the Amazon description I really expected a naughty romance novel here. I was also a bit confused by the time travel and terms used in the Amazon description. As such, I wouldn't have tried this book if it wasn't a book of the day. I'm glad I did, though; already the time travel element is making some sense and the dueling philosophers mentalities for social status is a really cool concept! I still don't think I'll buy and finish this one, but I can certainly recommend it to others now.

At first glance I figured this wasn't going to be a book I'm interested in. The cover is a bit suggestive and I'm not into reading these types of books. After reading the sample and seeing the erotic dream not too far in I will definitely not be finishing this book based on that. I didn't see any errors, and had there been an OBC review it could have possibly swayed me a bit simply because of the time travel aspect.

Had I not sampled the first ten pages as part of this program, I would not have chosen to read/sample this book. I strongly dislike the cover. Plus, this was labeled as a sci-fi/fantasy romance and I do not usually read romances.

I am not going to buy and read the whole book. As I said, I was turned off by the cover. Plus, I found the story a bit confusing in the first ten pages.

The book seems to be professionally edited. I did not notice typos or grammatical errors.

Dawn, the main character is interesting. However, I found the portion I read confusing. Perhaps it smooths out as the book moves on. I would strongly suggest that the choice of this cover should be reconsidered. It might just be me, but I found it cheesy and off-putting.

This book was not officially reviewed on OBC. The lack of a review did not affect my decision.
